Where To Get Indian Spices

A lot of people have asked me where to get some of the spices and ingredients in my recipes so this entry is a list of Indian stores that I know of. You can also order ingredients online for those of you that don’t have a store nearby. This online store carries SWAD and MTR products which I like the best.

If you know of any other Indian stores, please write them in the comments and I will add to my list for everyone to see as my knowledge is limited to the places where I have lived: NJ, NY, Berkeley, San Francisco and Los Angeles.

So now there are no excuses – you have to try my recipes! haha

    Fresh Farms International Market
    2626 West Devon Ave.
    Chicago, IL 60659
    773-764-3557
(great one stop shop for Indian produce and spices; it also has a sugarcane juice stand in the front)

    Patel Brothers Cash & Carry
    2610 West Devon Ave.

    Kamdar Plaza
    2646 West Devon Ave
    Chicago, IL 60688
    773-338-8100
(I go to this place mainly for the snack bar in the back, which has great pani puri)

    Boston

I had trouble finding shops in Boston. The only one I went to was this one in Burlington.

    Detroit

For great spices and vegetables around Detroit, go to Eastern Market, which is a huge, year-round farmers market with a spice store. The spices are a bit expensive but you can find everything there. The vegetables are always fresh and reasonably priced. Here is the website.

In New York you list only one of the branches of Patel Bros. There are at least two others I know of. I shop regularly at the Jackson Heights branch, 37-27 74th Street, Queens, NY (near several subway lines). There is a Subzi Mandi shop around the corner, as well as dozens of other Indian shops.

  4. Chitra says:

Thanks! I’ll add Patel Brothers & Subzi Mandi, but if you recommend any others please send. This is by no means an exhaustive list – just the shops I’ve been to and ones that others recommend:)
