Lettuce Wraps with Curried Tofu and Coconut Basil Chutney

For some time, I’ve wanted to make an Indian recipe using lettuce wraps and the opportunity showed itself on Sunday! I remember the first time I was introduced to the idea was at Koryo, a Korean restaurant in Berkeley that my friend Mia had taken me to.  The concept is quite foreign in Indian cooking so I thought it would be fun to try it out.

My Grandmother’s Tamarind Rice @ 3rd Ward Wind-Up

I still haven’t met anyone that doesn’t love tamarind rice when they first taste it.  This is a typical South Indian dish and I’m so excited to share my grandmother’s recipe for it.  My mother said that she searched and searched and she finally found it for me.  I’m so happy she did because my grandmother was an excellent cook and preserving her recipes are very important to me.

Beet Pachadi

I’ve been getting beets from my CSA lately so I’ve been digging into old recipes to use them up. A recipe that I received from my cousin Pradeep a few years ago is one that I have revisited a couple times already this season. It’s a South Indian dish called pachadi that I actually didn’t grow up eating even though my mother and Pradeep’s father are from the South.

Grilled Garam Masala Corn by Oscar Michel

My good friend Oscar came to visit from Oakland and he brought with him the most amazing grilled corn recipe using garam masala, a North Indian spice mixture that you can get at the Indian store or make at home like this.  I seriously have never had corn this flavorful before and was blown away at how simple his recipe was and so perfect for summer.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Mexican grilled cotija/mayo on corn, but if you’re looking for a lighter and more refreshing alternative, this is it. Ironically, Oscar is Mexican but makes a mean Indian corn;)

My Review of Ganesh Temple Canteen in City Spoonful

Recently, I had the pleasure of visiting the Ganesh Temple canteen with Anne Noyes Saini, Founder and Editor of City Spoonful, an online publication on food and culture in New York City.  Although a temple in Flushing Queens may be the last place you’d look to dine out, their cafeteria actually serves up some of the best South Indian cooking I’ve tasted in the city.  You can read my complete review of the canteen at City Spoonful.
