"The most serene", "city of canals and palaces", "elusive", "queen of the Adriatic" - what epithets mankind has not awarded Venice. A rich history; an uncertain future and present, wrapped in an atmosphere of thoughtfulness and silent sadness.
In Italy's most romantic city, built on 117 islands, the elements of water and air are intertwined. Countless canals have cut through the urban space, intricately paving the way through all areas, connecting the shores with elegant bridges - there are three of them across the Grand Canal alone.
The inimitable Venice, built by human efforts in defiance of the natural environment, is different from other cities. Resplendent on colorful postcards and tourist brochures, she reflects only a small part of her grace. But it is impossible to imagine the true face of the Northern Italian beauty without visiting her personally.
What a walk through the heart of the city is worth - St. Mark's Square with the Cathedral of the same name and the Doge's Palace (Palazzo Ducale), which has survived several terrible fires in its history, combining Gothic, Byzantine and Renaissance styles after numerous reconstructions.
Over the centuries, the historical center has preserved its original appearance of buildings and palaces. As if coming off the canvases of Giovanni Canaletto, Venice still plays with sunlight, reflecting the rays in endless channels. No wonder the city was dubbed "serene". His peaceful breathing responds in a leisurely rhythm, flowing under the monotonous swaying of the waters. Venice embodies the incredible power with which it resisted Turkish expansion centuries ago, and was also a trading center between Europe and the East.
The historic center runs along the Grand Canal, which cunningly crosses all the main districts of the city from the railway station to St. Mark's Square. It is divided into 6 parts - San Marco, San Polo, Dorsoduro, Castello, Cannaregio.
Venice is free of road smog and traffic, as there is no car traffic, and therefore hiking is the most enjoyable way to get around. But where passage is problematic, you can use water transport - river trams, vaporettos, motocafos, traghettos and, of course, the famous gondolas. It happens that in winter the lower quarters are flooded due to high tides.
The areas on the outskirts are also of interest. Tired of walking through the crowded center, it is pleasant to enjoy the tranquility on the island of Murano, famous for its Murano glass, Burano, famous for its wonderful lace, Torcello, where the Basilica of Santa Maria Assuna is located. Provincial serenity, not burdened by crowds of tourists, is provided here.
