The engine cylinder was positioned horizontally on a massive plate. The working process of the engine is also called the "Otto cycle" (Otto patented it in 1877). According to this cycle, the engine worked in four steps, or four cycles. At first, when an external force, such as turning the flywheel, caused the piston to move downward, the suction process took place: a working mixture of gas and air entered the cylinder through an open suction window. It was the first stroke, the suction. Then, when the crankshaft turned half a full turn and the piston began to move upward, the suction window closed and the working mixture was compressed. By the time the piston reached its final position, the mixture had been compressed to about one fifth of its original volume. At the same time, in a small gap between the cylinder cover and the piston, when it occupies the upper extreme position, called the compression chamber, an electric spark was ignited, from which the working mixture exploded. Under the influence of the expanding gases, the piston was forcefully directed downward. At the same time, the engine was running: the shaft was turning. This was the third stroke, the expansion (working stroke). And finally, when the piston, having reached the lowest position, started moving upward again, the exhaust window opened, through which the exhaust gases were removed from the cylinder. It was the fourth stroke, the exhaust. Then the cycle was repeated, but it was no longer necessary, as at the very beginning, when starting the engine, to turn the flywheel with the shaft manually. He was spinning by himself now. In this engine, one of the four piston strokes was operational. Thanks to the pre-compression, it was possible to increase the power of the gas engine and make it more economical than others.
